Drawing Chartres Labyrinth: A Contemplative Geometry Workshop

  • Goodman Arts Center, Singapore (map)

Delve into the geometry of the iconic Chartres Labyrinth, one of the best-known walking meditation paths in the world.

Overview

Program type

In-person workshop

Location

Singapore

Found all over the world, labyrinths are large works of art often used for walking meditation. They are also appreciated as smaller art pieces where one is able to “walk” the labyrinth by using one’s finger or eyesight to trace its singular path. More popular now than it was eight hundred years ago, the renowned Chartres Labyrinth, is inspiringly elegant in its symmetry and symbolism.

This workshop will commence with an introductory slideshow on Chartres Labyrinth before we dive into constructing this art piece utilizing the simple yet profound and time-tested tools of compass, straightedge and pencil. In this calm and meditative class, we will be utilizing the drawing process to connect our head, heart and hand.

What is Contemplative Geometry?

“Study nature, love nature, stay close to nature. It will never fail you.”

Frank Lloyd Wright

Contemplative geometry is the holistic study of the relationships between numbers, shapes, and patterns as they occur in nature and as applied and revered in sacred art and architecture across cultures around the world.

It emphasizes the underlying universal language and fundamental principles of nature within and around us. The art of drawing with a compass is an age-old practice that was very alive for humanity’s ancient ancestors. It can be a transformative practice as it touches a primordial place in us.

Sessions are held in a restful and contemplative environment and are an opportunity to slow down and enjoy the process of connecting to primordial shapes and patterns.
