Our Purpose & Values
Studio Lungta is a purpose-driven and values-driven agency. We see our work to support our caring clients as a powerful way to contribute to a sustainably flourishing world.
Core Values
Win-win-win solutions: Engineering solutions such that everyone benefits, including the greater good (the public and the planet)
Reverence for nature: Caring for all living beings and the planet that sustains us, and for nature’s ways of organizing and building with intrinsic harmony, efficiency, and beauty
Integrity and authenticity: Striving for compassion and sustainability beyond the buzzwords, with genuine care (rather than lip-service or greenwashing) and with a deep aspiration to embody the values we share with our clients authentically
Bold vision + grounded realism: Starting with a well-considered ideal and then exploring how to bring it to the ground in the best way achievable in a given context
Holism and systems thinking: Recognizing the interdependence within all natural and created systems, and employing that insight to find whole solutions for the whole challenge
Excellence in action: Beginning with deep listening and attentive observation, moving through contextually appropriate processes with attention to the details that matter, and always aspiring to continual refinement of craft, upholding best practices at every level
Informed compassion and generous kindness: Understanding our challenges and solutions such that we continually improve our effectiveness in reducing our harm footprint and maximizing our help footprint — including respect for the humans doing the work and respect for living beings and the natural world
Practice Commitments & Aspirations
How do the first principles and core values outlined above translate into our practice? This is a question we ask ourselves in every aspect of every project, and it’s more of a lens than a script. That said, here are some illustrative examples.
Starting with deep listening and attentive observation: For design to be responsive and relevant, it must begin with humble presence and probing curiosity, to make space for a robust understanding of the needs, the context, and the needs to be addressed.
Optimizing synergies and efficiencies: Making the best use of always-limited resources (including the client’s budget, the planet’s natural resources, and everyone’s time and energy), and always seeking creative ways to fine-tune solutions and unlock hidden possibilities.
Thoughtful material selection: In our placemaking and product-making projects, we carefully consider cradle-to-cradle factors to identify the most sensible materials, which often means making the best use of natural and locally sourced materials that meet the needs well, minimizing toxic and polluting materials (and ensuring their responsible handling), etc.
Healthy and life-affirming work conditions: E.g. safe and supportive working environments, healthy and respectful relationships, living wages, etc.
Maximizing benefit to people and the planet: Staying alert to opportunities for win-wins, including force multipliers that expand the positive impacts of our work and send beneficial ripples into the world.
First Principles Informing Our Purpose
We’re in this together. The purpose of life is to help one another through it. The deepest and most lasting joy arises from service to a greater good. As H. H. the Dalai Lama says, to be “wisely selfish” is to aspire to find our own fulfillment in ways that help others find theirs.
We all could use support to live our most compassionate lives. Most people we encounter would take a more sensitive and sustainable approach if supported with clear understanding and compelling, accessible solutions.
Creativity is compassion’s most powerful ally. The infinite wellspring of human creativity provides us with both the insight and the impulse to power the journey toward the best achievable solutions for sustainable and sensible living.
